Louisiana Public Service Commission Residential Electric Utility Bill Comparison by Company by month from January 2011 through July 2011

Attached you will find an excellent source of information on monthly residential electric rates charged to Louisiana customers by utility companies regulated by the Louisiana Public Service Commission for the months January through July of 2011. The attached pdf  files show the rates charged to residential electric customers by the investor owned and electric cooperatives providing service in Louisiana. You will notice, on average, that the rates charged by electric cooperatives tend to be a little lower than those rates charged by investor owned utility companies. This is due, in large measure, to the fact that most electric co-ops in the state have been purchasing their power under long term/fixed priced contracts with Louisiana Generating Company’s coal fired generator located in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiaina. Louisiana Generating is a subsidiary of NRG. Some of those co-op contracts have already expired, and more are set to expire over the next several years. It is likely that with the increase in the price of coal, coupled with newly proposed stricter CO2, SOX, and NOX emission standards proposed by the EPA, the price of coal fired generation will experience significant increases, not only in Louisiana, but across the entire nation. Consequently, the prices to be paid by the electric cooperatives in Louisiana who buy their power from Louisiana Generating underly newly negotiated contracts will likely experience some upward pricing pressure. This scenario will play out over the next several years, so stay tuned. In the meantime, the attachments provides some very interesting data.
